“「11」 I have made a fool of myself, but you drove me to it. I ought to have been commended by you, for I am not in the least inferior to the “super-apostles,”* even though I am nothing. / *Or the most eminent apostles
「12」 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.
「13」 How were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was never a burden to you? Forgive me this wrong!
「14」 Now I am ready to visit you for the third time, and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.
「15」 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well. If I love you more, will you love me less?
「16」 Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you. Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery!
「17」 Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent to you?
「18」 I urged Titus to go to you and I sent our brother with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not walk in the same footsteps by the same Spirit?”

“「11」 Well, now I've done it! I've made a complete fool of myself by going on like this. But it's not all my fault; you put me up to it. You should have been doing this for me, sticking up for me and commending me instead of making me do it for myself. You know from personal experience that even if I'm a nobody, a nothing, I wasn't second-rate compared to those big-shot apostles you're so taken with.
「12」 All the signs that mark a true apostle were in evidence while I was with you through both good times and bad： signs of portent, signs of wonder, signs of power.
「13」 Did you get less of me or of God than any of the other churches? The only thing you got less of was less responsibility for my upkeep. Well, I'm sorry. Forgive me for depriving you.
「14」 Everything is in readiness now for this, my third visit to you. But don't worry about it; you won't have to put yourselves out. I'll be no more of a bother to you this time than on the other visits. I have no interest in what you have--only in you. Children shouldn't have to look out for their parents; parents look out for the children.
「15」 I'd be most happy to empty my pockets, even mortgage my life, for your good. So how does it happen that the more I love you, the less I'm loved?
「16」 And why is it that I keep coming across these whiffs of gossip about how my self-support was a front behind which I worked an elaborate scam? Where's the evidence?
「17」 Did I cheat or trick you through anyone I sent?
「18」 I asked Titus to visit, and sent some brothers along. Did they swindle you out of anything? And haven't we always been just as aboveboard, just as honest?”

「14」 지금 나는 이렇게 세 번째로 여러분에게로 갈 준비가 되어 있습니다. 그러나 여러분에게 폐를 끼치는 일은 하지 않겠습니다. 내가 구하는 것은 여러분의 재물이 아니라 바로 여러분입니다. 자식이 부모를 위하여 재산을 모아 두는 것이 아니라, 부모가 자식을 위하여 재산을 모아 두는 것이 마땅한 것입니다.
「15」 여러분을 위해서라면 나는 기쁜 마음으로 비용을 쓰겠고, 내 몸까지도 희생하겠습니다. 내가 여러분을 더 많이 사랑하면 할수록, 여러분은 나를 덜 사랑하겠습니까?
「16」 어쨌든 나는 여러분에게 짐이 된 일은 없습니다. 그런데 내가 간교한 속임수로 여러분을 사로잡았다고 말하는 사람들도 있습니다.
「17」 내가 여러분에게 보낸 사람들 가운데 누구를 통해서 여러분을 착취한 일이 있습니까?
「18」 내가 디도에게 여러분에게로 가라고 권하였고, 또 그와 함께 형제 한 사람을 보냈는데, 디도가 여러분을 착취한 일이 있습니까? 디도와 내가 같은 정신으로 행하고, 같은 방식으로 살지 않았다는 말입니까?”

[반추/rumination : “인간적인 사랑은 대가를 바랍니다. 그러나 바울은 예수님을 섬김의 기준으로 삼았습니다.
바울은 “여러분이 나를 사랑하든 말든 개의치 않습니다. 나는 기꺼이 나 자신을 여러분을 위하고 또 여러분을 하나님께로 인도하기 위해 내가 궁핍하게 될지라도 완전하게 내어주겠습니다.” 바울은 예수님을 섬김의 기준으로 삼았습니다.
“나는 나 자신을 얼마나 분에 넘치도록 내어주는가에 대해 관심이 없습니다. 나는 그 일을 즐겁게 할 것입니다.” 섬김은 바울에게 기쁨이 되었습니다.
예수님의 기준
예수님에 의하면, 하나님의 종은 주님을 섬기기 위해 다른 사람들의 종이 되는 것입니다. 예수 그리스도는 이 땅의 사회주의자를 초월하는 사회주의자라고 할 수 있습니다. 주님은 주의 나라에서는 가장 위대한 자가 모든 사람들의 종이 될 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다.
성도의 진가는 복음을 가르치는 것이 아니라 제자들의 발을 씻는 것입니다. 즉, 사람들에게는 중요하지 않지만 하나님께서 중요하게 여기시는 것을 행하는 것입니다. 바울은 자신이 치러야 할 희생이 어떠한 것이든 개의치 않고 다른 사람을 향한 하나님의 지대한 관심에 호응하기를 기뻐했습니다.
바울은 단지 복음만 전하는 자가 아니라 주님의 손에 붙들린 바 되어 다른 영혼들을 위해 ‘찢겨진 빵’이 되고 ‘부어지는 포도주’가 되었던 것입니다.
