모든 주도권은 하나님께 있었다. 모든 것이 값없고 자유로운 은혜였다. 인간의 하찮은 노력으로는 그 은혜를 획득할 수 없었으며, 그 기쁨을 계속 누리는 것도 그들 자신의 노력으로 되는 일이 아니었다. 다행히 인간에게는 그럴 필요가 없었다. 하늘의 복을 우리가 돈을 주고 사거나 얻어 낼 수 있는 것은 아니다. 인간의 '행위'에는 아무 '공로'가 없지만, 믿음은 곧 사랑의 행위로 이어지기 마련이다. 우리가 사랑의 일들을 행하기 때문에 구원받은 것이 아니다. 오히려 구원받았기 때문에 그런 일들을 행하는 것이다. 우리는 오직 믿음으로 구원받으며, 이 믿음은 순전히 하나님의 선물이다.

이렇게 구원받은 이들은 [겸손한 확신]을 품고서 자신의 자아에게 작별을 고하게 된다. 이전의 '선한' 결심과 함께 양심의 가책과불안, 온갖 집착을 다 내려놓는 것이다. 처음에 개신교의 모든 교리는 바로 이 확신에서 생겨났다. (C.S 루이스)

우리 안에 겸손한 확신의 태도를 가지고 있을 때, 진심으로 기뻐할 수 있다.

All initiative was with God. Everything was free and free grace. It was not possible for them to obtain that grace through insignificant human efforts, and it was not through their own efforts that they continued to enjoy that joy. Fortunately, humans didn't have to do that. The blessings of heaven cannot be bought or obtained with money. There is no 'merit' in human 'actions', but faith inevitably leads to acts of love. We are not saved because we do works of love. Rather, we do such things because we have been saved. We are saved by faith alone, and this faith is purely a gift from God.

Those who are saved in this way say goodbye to their egos with [humble confidence]. Along with previous ‘good’ resolutions, we let go of all guilt, anxiety, and obsession. At first, all Protestant doctrines arose from this conviction. (C.S. Lewis)

When we have an attitude of humble confidence within us, we can truly rejoice.
